In recent decades, advances in neuroscience and attachment research have transformed our understanding of how change happens in therapy.

We now know that early relational experiences shape the right brain—the part of us responsible for emotion, regulation, and connection—and that these patterns are carried in the body and in nonverbal, implicit processes.

Healing, therefore, does not occur primarily through insight or words alone, but through moment-to-moment attunement, embodied awareness, and the co-regulation of emotional states within a safe relationship.

InterSoma builds on this understanding by bringing conscious, attuned touch and embodied presence directly into the therapeutic relationship—offering a powerful pathway for transforming deeply held relational patterns.

About InterSoma

Wynn Tamura

Founder of the Tamura Method

The essence of InterSoma was originally developed by our beloved teacher, Wynn Tamura, through over 45 years of practice in Oakland, California. The method blends somatic psychotherapy with subtle energy work and touch-based healing. It is now carried forward by a group of experienced trainers dedicated to preserving and evolving this unique approach.

At the heart of InterSoma is the understanding that within each of us lives both an authentic Adult Self and young parts that carry pain, unmet needs, and early relational wounds. Emotional suffering often arises when these wounded young parts become activated and take over, shaping how we feel, connect, and respond.

InterSoma facilitates direct contact with these young parts not only through memory or verbal reflection, but through real-time embodied connection. Informed by attachment research and neuroscience, this approach recognizes that early wounds are often held in implicit, nonverbal patterns and can be transformed through attuned presence, touch, and co-regulation.

By combining conscious touch with embodied presence, the practitioner creates a safe relational field in which the inner child part can feel seen, met, and supported in new ways.

Touch in this method is not generic. It is deeply attuned to each person’s specific needs. Practitioners use their presence, touch, and energetic awareness to connect with body memory, emotional states, and core wounds. This creates a direct experience of safety, connection, and repair in the very places where development was once interrupted.

As this connection strengthens, the client’s Adult Self naturally becomes more embodied, loving, and central. A new internal relationship begins to form—one in which the adult can care for and integrate these younger parts. This shift often leads to greater self-compassion, authenticity, and emotional resilience.

Somatic Healing Beyond Talk Therapy

Hands-on somatic psychotherapy session using embodied relational touch

While rooted in somatic psychotherapy, InterSoma has been adapted by a wide range of healing professionals—including massage therapists, acupuncturists, physical therapists, and psychedelic guides. Sessions often begin with dialogue and then transition to the massage table, where the client remains fully clothed and engaged in ongoing verbal and energetic communication. Touch is gentle, subtle, and always collaborative.

InterSoma stands out for its emphasis on tracking both muscular and energetic patterns in the body, while also attending to the moment-to-moment relational process between practitioner and client.

Practitioners learn to sense where activation, holding, or disconnection are present, and how to use presence and touch to support regulation, integration, and healing. At its core, the method is relational: transformation happens through the meeting of body, attachment, and attuned connection.

This embodied, intuitive, and deeply relational way of working brings clients into contact with their deepest truths—and gives practitioners the tools to guide that process with care, love, and skill.
